This last week, we had the pleasure of seeing a great part of this city — we saw the CRLS graduation, the High School Extension School graduation, all 11 eighth-grade graduations as well as the Community Learning Center graduation — and we were impressed by what we saw. As newly elected officials, within one week we had the opportunity and privilege to see a snapshot of the entire Cambridge Public School system. We believe the education that our children (and adults) receive in Cambridge will prepare them well for life in the 21st century.
At all of these ceremonies, students were honored and celebrated for much more than just academic success. Going to the eighth-grade graduations in particular reinforced for us that education is about much more than book learning. It is about becoming a fully engaged participant in society. Each event was well rehearsed and highlighted the talents of the students and each school’s sense of community and identity. The programs included music, art, poetry, dance and public speaking in which students offered thoughtful reflections on their school experience and hopes for the future.
We were struck by the real accomplishments of these students. When we reflect back on our own eighth-grade graduations, we have no doubt that today’s CPS students surpass our own experiences. When the rising ninth-graders get to CRLS, they will be part of a truly diverse school and worldly community. These are things to celebrate.
We thank all the families, teachers, staff and administration for their dedication and tireless effort to bring this day about for all the students, their families and the community.
